Golden Bay New Zealand

Golden Bay is a shallow, paraboloid shaped bay at the northwest end of New Zealand's South Island. An arm of the Tasman Sea, the bay lies southwest of Cook Strait and west of Tasman Bay. It is separated from the sea by the Farewell Spit. The Aorere and Takaka Rivers flow into the bay from the south.
It is known for being a popular tourist destination, because of its good weather and relaxed, friendly lifestyle.
The west and northern regions of the bay are largely unpopulated. Along its southern coast are the towns of Takaka and Collingwood, and also theAbel Tasman National Park. Separation Point, the natural boundary between Golden and Tasman Bays is situated within the park.
In December 2011, it (as well as much of the Nelson/Tasman region) was hit by heavy rain and flooding, which caused to many homes around the Pohara/Ligar Bay/Tata Beach/Wainui area. The road to Totaranui, a popular isolated tourist destination was badly damaged and is due to reopen on 29 June 2012. The floods meant a loss of custom for many shops and businesses in the peak tourist season. By June 2012, the entirety of Golden Bay was open and operating as normal.
Its beaches are popular locations for retirees and holiday-homes.

Wonders of Takaka

Venture over legendary Takaka Hill to find the township of Takaka, the main centre for Golden Bay. Enjoy friendly cafés and browse the art shops.

Takaka is located at the south eastern end of Golden Bay in the Nelson region. With a community that includes many alternative lifestylers, it’s a town full of character. There’s a small museum, a movie theatre and a great choice of shops and cafés. The town also offers plenty of value-for-money accommodation, including backpacker lodges, B & Bs and homestays. If you’re planning to hike in Kahurangi National Park, Takaka is a good place to take on essential supplies. Other nearby attractions include Waikoropupu Springs, the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, and an art trail that will reveal the region’s creativity. Functional facts: Approx. population 1150, good range of shops and services

Farewell Spit Tours

The best way to visit Farewell Spit is via a Scenic Flight. Come fly with Jim! www.goldenbayflights.co.nz

Farewell Spit's beauty is equalled by the gruelling nature of the driving conditions. Sand, salt and sea-spray take their toll - but with the RL Bedfords vehicles, which are the mainstay of our fleet, we have a vehicle which is both robust and comfortable. These character vehicles have proven their sustainability over a period of many years, and carried many hundreds of guests, in all sorts of weather conditions, to the lighthouse and return.
The fleet is maintained to an exacting standard, refurbishment of the interiors is ongoing for passenger comfort and a hi-tech sound system ensures you won't miss a word of the commentary.

The Farewell Spit colony is the only one right at sea level, affording excellent views of the parent birds caring for their young. We have the only licence granted by the Department of Conservation to visit this colony, which is New Zealand's newest nesting site for Gannets.

To see them you walk beyond the Lighthouse (about 30 minutes) over the sand near the end of the Spit - you may get your feet wet.

Viewing Gannets is a two way process - the birds are known for their curiosity and often fly low over our visitors to get a closer look.

Nelson/Tasman and West Coast regions Walking the Heaphy Track
The Heaphy Track, located in Kahurangi National Park at the north-west corner of the South Island, is the longest of the DOC Great Walks. For 78.4 kilometres the track crosses the park's range of landscapes, starting from the junction of the Brown and Aorere Rivers, over expansive tussock downs to the lush forests, nikau palms and roaring seas of the West Coast.

The track is well formed and suitable for fit, well-equipped people. All rivers and major streams are bridged. The track takes 4-6 days to walk. A mountain bike trial is being held from 1 May to 30 September until September 2013. It takes 2-3 days to ride the track. The trial will be fully assessed by the end of December 2013 and a decision made whether seasonal mountain biking continues. There are huts and campsites where you can stay for a fee. Bookings are required.

The nearest towns that cater for trampers and mountain bikers are Nelson, Takaka, Westport and Karamea. Karamea has an information centre, petrol station, accommodation, cafés and restaurants, supermarket and general store, and a range of transport options. Takaka has an i-SITE, petrol stations, supermarket, small sport/camping and hardware stores as well as cafés and accommodation. Collingwood has a petrol station, grocery store, shops, cafés, a hotel and accommodation.

Alert/Important notice
24 February 2012: Mountain biking is allowed on the Heaphy Track on a seasonal basis, from 1 May to 30 September.

Jim’s Heaphy Track Transport service connects with more centres and will fly with just 1 passenger if requested. He has daily flights between Takaka, Karamea, Nelson, Motueka and will book shuttle transport to collect trampers from Takaka airfield if required. Farewell Spit Tours

Farewell SpitFew regions provide such a wealth of impressive natural wonders to explore within such a small and accessible area. The best way to travel is via a scenic flight with Remote Adventures, a business owned and operated by Jim Larsen. The diverse landscapes of North-West Golden Bay provide breathtaking views, rich habitats for wildlife. A truly memorable experience.

Farewell Spit is more strictly protected than a national park. Vehicle access is granted only to supervised tours. Through sharing the experience of Farewell Spit we can help to raise public awareness of this precious ecosystem, so vital for migratory birds.
