Heaphy Track, Longest of the Great Walks

Walk the longest of the New Zealand's 9 Great Walks

At 78.4 km the Heaphy Track is the longest of the Great Walks.

Trace an historic route

Used for hundreds of years by Maori seeking pounamu (greenstown) for tools, weapons and ornaments, the route was first cut into a track in the 1860s by gold prospectors to connect the Collingwood and West Coast goldfields.

Perhaps spot a kiwi or a carnivorous land snail

Great spotted kiwi live within Kahurangi National Park particularly in the area around Gouland Downs. Listen for the birds calling at night from Perry Saddle, Gouland Downs and Saxon huts.
Kahurangi National Park is also home to half of New Zealand's 40 species of carnivorous land snail (Powelliphanta). Spot these nocturnal creatures around Heaphy Hut on a damp night.
